I warn you I am thinking .....

theodoracleave.com

A friend ( architect ) this morning asked where I developed my creating style from......

My style...?
It is a flip in the brain to pare down to simplify a shape....
It has the basic form ie true to life ( well under it all it has..) then to draw like this it is niave, childlike.
My father made up stories of his day in the bush & around town when each of us was small, Khaki the goanna took us to many of his observations....
I would draw in the soft dirt & make houses & streets as a pre school child as many do.....I was constantly weaving a story....
Later as things got a bit hairy at my house I would escape into this world.....
Dreams can be very powerful in an angry place one has no means to move from.....

Each of us & many of my friends tell me the same that we developed a heightened sensitivity to keeping safe... we used our senses early.... observing body language, a voice tone, a smell of anger ? & if we learnt that well, we could exit while it was still safe, because when it happened we were told to STAY.  Observing in a war zone inside one room when you are small is horrible....but what skills I took from that time....as do many others who found their way into a hostile world.

I observe all the time, so somewhere in the depths of me you see out front LOL
I draw basically only once & pen it to then send for cutting & I paint....or it is stitched or laid out for others with different skills to work with....

In a sense I am giving back in the form of happy spaces, love & for everyone who touches my work to be somehow changed for the better by it......
Now you may just understand if copying & using my work for a private gain is you take away part of who I am..my journey ...my past development ..to find serenity & happiness...

Besides it all stems from loving this creating.... self taught, unrestrained in some ways ...it works for me...because it is me ???

You see my stories in buttons with some stitching....I am  forever making stories...with drawing ... painting .....with the stitches...the way one lays a fabric over something & stitches it.......
Much of my drawings sit in folders and now some are wandering about....with stitching, with ideas for others to create into their sense of self....I find painting my peaceful spot & stitching I do enjoy but my old whiplash injury absolutely hates it... so now I need to leave that to others.....but my imagination is strong....

So now lets see a little of how this presents itself....LOL

I love the snowfolk huddled together, keeping each other close & warm

This angel tends to the garden....detailed etching around the frame is of flower & 2 leaves..

This deer I love...sort of take it home & love it

These pair when I drew them as a button their story was & still is "I promise you the stars "he says in that dashing red scarf.... & she believed it was possible ...

Puddings.... signify a warm Christmas table with happy families.....we need to sew this into our world

trees keep this beautiful house snug in winter snow....I first drew this some years back now in a series of stitching houses....& one night the house was looted ...

Snowman hello, happy to see you .....I love snowmen they are happy parts of our imagination in Christmas summers

This house is tall, striking & welcoming... come inside...pudding & foods are ready to serve, the trees inside are decorated...there is laughter... warmth .....

Barb Smith designs©
The post arrived just after 1pm & I had that sense of what others often tell me, it is like Christmas when a parcel from me arrives...
Well for me it was that today......

18 new little 4cm decorations / buttons to add to the stitchings I have ready to transfer to paper layouts & to paper for the website decoration categories

Things .....

Arriving today are the wood decorations to this new stitchery...
Express Post pony wasn't in a hurry so failed to arrive yesterday..
I was a bit busy so would not have had time to touch them all & ponder LOL

I finally got to my physio late yesterday... still limping & it hurts but a little better I think...or is it my imagination ....hope not ... as if this is the new reality it scares me completely LOL

My friend Philippa of Whiskers & Wings design. of Chloe the cow.

Philippa & I met after I resigned from public service, we both had a table at Canberra's  Calvary Hospital selling our creations back then ...
We had been both exhibiting in school art & craft shows but each of us was just a name on a tag...
We went on through many years side by side at the Hall Markets & then later moving into pattern designing...
I loved this cow & have seen her about a bit on pinterest.....
&
I now have a page of Cloth Dolls from her designs on my pinterest site, if you need any patterns I speak with Philippa on a regular basis ....so email me for any request

Val's Stitcheries with cat designs

Val posted these to me last evening ...I just love the pinks.
I originally worked this cat club in blues...
These pinks & the pastel green is beautiful.
Thanks for sharing Val.

When I drew these in Cohuna about 15 years ago maybe....my cat Millie lived with me then...
She would wistfully look into the branches at some cheeky bird...
The gardens I drew were completely in my past from Canberra...as the soil in that first house in Cohuna had toughened over ...
These have evoked many memories

The beginnings of my own cats that stayed for many years was in Brisbane
when a flatmate went off to collect her kitten & arrived back with 2..she thought I'd love it.
It was tiny, black fur that stuck straight out & I called her Mousetrap...
Her sister was a tabby & white beauty named Alice..
Two so different like all siblings I think ...
Mousetrap would climb this huge tall pine tree & Alice would be at the base to go tell & some of our manly neighbours would climb up to rescue madam
When I moved to Canberra she came too & managed to be lost for 3 weeks...
A most terrible separation for me...
She was found, then escaped again from a motel....so well away from her home ...
Found again by these people who ran the motel in Queanbeyan...
Not long after that she retired to Cohuna to live with my parents...until she was 16.
To Mousetrap & Alice

This says it all really
My own home with a cat.....
Love this stitchery, it was also a button once ..anyone recall ???

Using the Advent Stitcheries

Advent Calendars I have grown to adore....
I have done 2 design sets using buttons...
&
I drew 24 designs to stitch onto a calendar with stockings or mittens or small bags...the layouts come with the designs...
See below Val did exquisite  embroidery on samples for me....I have just embellished with Noel sign, & a Tres Bien sign & a small robin in holly decoration....

During the initial drawing of theses I also did stitch & some still wait to be made up...these have some stitched embellishments on the tops..
So for as little as $7.50 or is it $7.00  plus posting ...it is exceptional value.

The stitcheries can be also used on other gift or decoration projects...or stitch as one sheet & frame..
or is that a table runner with a few stitched in blocks at the end...
I say today be creative with the beginnings I give...be inspired to stitch more & see how different they look on different projects....

Packaged & Ready

These are the newest of the designs in stitcheries...
Bell, Berry deer, Home sweet...Twig angel & the snowman with deer & tree....
All with the little small decoration tag...

Creating more Stitcheries..

I spent some time yesterday at the drawing board....getting these ready for the Stitchery Bags with the little tags....
I have 4 more ready .....well all the design work has been completed....little shapes are painted

Quite exciting to be working in this phase again....
Soon there will be more coming out as
Plain Stitchery Sheets.

I have observed on my pinterest & my blog how many of the world is capable of stitching without directions or detailed projects....  often we do not write in the same language...but we sure manage....
I am more a visual creative person than a structure creative....most of my books were just the stitchery designs.... a road map to creativity !

In the beginning of this stitching adventure colleagues & I would have the stitcheries done as single fabric squares & then we hit on the idea to ask q quilter to fashion it into a quilt for us.....
I was reminded of this last night as I was going through my box of old photos....
They look divine...

So we can all go on a little adventure....
which way each of us will go will be our wonderful creative self...
Be it a Christmas bag or stocking or a full blown pieced quilt....
***

On another topic.... about me of course LOL

I am experiencing another bout of arthritis 9 triggered in car accident 50 years ago ..which presents itself on the sciatic nerve...
So sore & very tricky when I begin to walk....
This is 50 years that this has occurred.......
I do not know how I hairdressed all day like this except I was younger....it was raw pain as it still is today....
SO MY FRIENDS
be mindful when you drive......
there is so much ratbag stupid stuff in Bendigo at the moment....it was cutting corners & if I was first in line I'd cringe because I know what it is like to lose some mobility, suffer pain,  some of the time..

NOW it is not waiting for traffic to proceed who have right of way...
I have had double bogey truck ( with business name on side ) pull out in front of me....
&
the other day the Swanhill/ Kerang transport took his cue on the red light & I sat at the side street with a green light absolutely dumbfounded..

This is about not knowing how to drive......
just is so peculiar but traffic aggression does happen when a city begins to expand .

I guess new driving skill adjustments are needed & it all begins in the driver's mind ......drrrr
 I do wonder ..

So on that note let's stitch on fabric !!!

Interesting....

This is not about the picture...
Yesterday I did the beginnings of a Health Assessment thing...
which is wonderfully structured & inspiring...
It is like a Life Coaching structure which for me, makes perfect sense...
So for lunch yesterday there was much chopping & rinsing & packing up salad & veges...
&
getting some different foods in..
Not much else was done, but this is a great step into a new view...another journey...

It is like the varigated threads from Cottage Garden Threads .....I wander into Pam's "Garden"
when I look at her colours & the blendings & the stitchings that are worked in these colours & a new view opens up there too.

Craft Alive Bendigo 3

I stopped by the Turmerix booth.... as I am interested in this product but thinking ....
Interesting conversation & I am now more informed...

Off to say farewell To Rosemary & Angelos  .... amongst the fabrics Rosemary has another passion
Jackson Hill Fine Foods
I was so lucky to be given a jar of this tasty marmalade..today....

Rosemary & I were discussing a simple technique of the banners.... & into this conversation arrives Priscilla.... she spies a santa button in my bag.... so now she has it !!
The conversation moved along, recently arrived from x to Y but originally from Rosemary's state of SA & it turned out Pricillia's Mum used to drive to one of Rosemary's quilt shops ( Stitch in Time ) in SA... to get her fix of fabric & thread.... and her best friend came from Cohuna.... the world is often small & 6 steps....
I loom forward to seeing Priscilla again soon !!!

Cottage Garden Threads

I was really happy.... today I had a wonderful conversation with Pam from Cottage Garden Threads ..
We talked about any number of work topics ...
as
she selected buttons for her shop...

We can understand the nature of our work....
As Pam delicately paints each strand of her varigated thread range....( It's a HUGE RANGE) of magical colours blended along thread..taking much fine motor skills, consistence, persistence ..& total passion & not to mention concentration...
For me I ply the paint onto wood in a similar style... with those same attributes...

We discussed where our businesses began .....from a kitchen table somewhere LOL

So as Pam's process began with immaculate packaging of each skein of thread & a You Tube shows that manufacturing process...magic !
To this that Katie Dawson has design & stitched in the thread...and her friend has applie dit to a most divine chair.....

I was very fortunate to have been given gifts today of these 4 packs of threads which are suitable for Christmas stitching....
I needed to educate myself I thought after 2 events came together...Val had suggested stitching some of the new little brown paper Christmas designs in varigated ....& being into red as I paint I was not sure, so suggested red for santas but ok for other Christmas ...
Last night I thought of the Cottage Garden Threads & explored the reds today with Pam's advice.
So now I am keen....
The mind ticks over LOL

Katie is doing these from a book designer who asked if she would stitch the designs for her...
As Pam & Brenda & Katie said yesterday that opportunities just happen & we go with them...
This is an amazing gorgeous fix & the small stitchings encased in Liberty fabric...I adore the threads hanging above.......all part of this so interesting story......
Then I am leaving Via the tumeric guy & Rosemary & Angelos .....
More things happen...see next post

Painted ..sewed some today....

I was testing the instructions today & was left with this Santa traced on the fabric bag...
Painting later in the afternoon...those cute little moose & deer buttons & the snowman..
This was painted also...
Really enjoy fabric painting at times...
This is the stitchery in brown paper bag Happy Santa

I had done these stitcheries a while ago now  some are from the advent calendar trials etc.....
So they needed assembling by machine ..
Finally they have been done...

Great to do when the day is true winter, cold & chill factor from snow up the road a bit & the house was snug & safe...
Lovely feel.

ADVENT CALENDAR STITCHERIES

24 Little Advent Calendar stitcheries
are on the website...Only...
These come with a stocking, mitten & little tree bag layouts.
Fantastic for making the 24 stockings... or 24 Mittens ..or 24 little U bags....for Advent.
Yet these designs are also easily applied to a tag stitchery to add to gifts...or if you are sewing arger stockings one stitched can become the tag...
I would love the idea of these done into a frame.....no numbers needed.....

Also mix up your Advent creation by doing some stockings, some mittens & some U bags.....nothing to stop you doing small square bags either....

MOST of YOU KNOW MY Wood painted designs.... it is how I draw the world from where I stand....
these are now coming to you in stitcheries...
*
Not quite where I began in this industry but by 1996  I was stitching....
or thanks to many stitching samples for me....
brooches followed ...& kits for painting
& buttons arrived around 15 years ago...
*
Now I am eager to play with all sorts of things including one off button stories & well who knows what else....
It all comes with my ©
***
I love experiencing creativity ....
so here there are many options in a little cello bag for $7.50 + postage which I would hazard a guess that Mr Postie would only charge a large letter for this....

Bags of stuff

copyright Barb Smith

My package try outs last week went off on their own tangent...
distracted again....

It is the beginning of winter...
today...
I am going to enjoy it
